Working capital financing is short-term business funding that covers timing gaps such as payroll, materials or a slow-paying customer. Bellgrove Lenders, a small-business funding broker in Appleton, Wisconsin, explains how it is repaid and how it compares with a credit line or advance. Lending partners rule on each request and write its terms.
| What it is | Short-term funding for timing gaps |
|---|---|
| Repaid | Fixed installments; partner sets the schedule |
| Outagamie County employers | 5,304 in 2023 (CBP) |
| Under five employees | 46.5% of county employers |
| Construction employers | 632, 59.0% under five staff (CBP 2023) |

What working capital financing is
Working capital is the money a business uses to run day to day: wages, rent, supplies, utilities. Working capital financing is a short-term loan that fills a gap in that cash when money goes out before it comes in. It is meant for a timing problem with a visible end, such as a large invoice due in 45 days, not for a business that loses money every month.
Partners usually pay the funds in one lump sum. Repayment starts soon after, on a schedule the partner sets.
How it is repaid
Repayment is normally a fixed installment, debited from the business bank account. Depending on the partner and the product, that can be monthly, weekly or even every business day. Before signing, check three things:
- The payment frequency. Daily or weekly debits feel smaller but come out of the account far more often. Line them up against when deposits actually arrive.
- The total repaid. Add up every payment plus any fees. That total, against the amount received, is the real cost.
- Early payoff terms. Some agreements reduce the cost if you repay early; others do not. Ask the partner directly.
For a payment on a monthly schedule, the loan payment calculator shows the monthly payment, total interest and total repaid for an amount, rate and term you enter. Weekly or daily schedules are not modeled there: ask the partner for the total of all payments.
How the amount is decided
There is no standard figure. Partners generally look at the business's bank deposits over recent months, what it already owes, how long it has operated and the owner's credit history. They then decide how much the business can carry and on what schedule. Bellgrove does not set or predict amounts; only a partner's review produces one.
Where it shows up in Outagamie County, WI
Most local employers are small. In 2023, 46.5 percent of Outagamie County's 5,304 employer establishments had fewer than five employees (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). In a firm that size, one late customer payment can decide whether the next payroll clears.
- Construction: the county had 632 construction employers in 2023, 59.0 percent with fewer than five employees (CBP 2023). Crews and materials are paid long before a general contractor or owner pays the invoice.
- Food service: 469 food service and drinking place employers (CBP 2023) carry weekly payroll and supplier bills that do not wait for a slow month to end.
- Medical and dental: 383 ambulatory health care employers (CBP 2023) pay staff every period while insurance payments for the same visits arrive later.
These are county-wide counts. The Appleton, WI page breaks out the office ZIP code, and the sector pages go deeper into each trade's cash cycle.
Three short-term tools, compared
| Working capital loan | Line of credit | Merchant cash advance | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Funds arrive | Once, as a lump sum | As you draw them | Once, as a lump sum |
| Comes back | Fixed installments | As you repay draws | A cut of sales, or set debits |
| Priced by | Interest and fees | Interest on what is drawn, and any fees | Factor rate; not a loan |
| Fits | A one-off shortfall with a known end | Gaps that keep recurring | Card-heavy businesses that have compared other options |
If the shortfall returns every few weeks, a business line of credit may fit better than repeated loans. A merchant cash advance is not a loan and is often a costlier way to cover the same gap; compare the total collected before choosing it. All six options sit together on the comparison page.
Before you make the call
Have three months of business bank statements, a list of what the business owes and the invoice or bill behind the gap. If the gap is the first payroll after a new hire, read our piece on hiring a first employee in the Fox Cities. Then see how a request moves from first call to partner decision.
