In short

A business line of credit is an approved limit the business draws on as needed, paying interest only on the outstanding balance. Bellgrove Lenders, a small-business funding broker in Appleton, Wisconsin, explains draws, draw periods, revolving and non-revolving lines, and secured versus unsecured lines. Lending partners decide each request and set rates and terms.

Limit, draw and balance on a Fox Cities, WI credit line

A partner approves a maximum amount, the limit. Nothing is borrowed until you draw: you move money from the line into the business account, or the partner pays a bill directly. Interest is charged on the amount drawn, not on the unused limit, although some lines carry a fee for keeping the line open or for each draw.

If the limit is the ceiling, the balance is what you owe today, and the available credit is the difference.

Ask which kind an offer is. The difference matters more than it looks.

When the draw window closes

Many lines allow draws only during a set window, the draw period. When it ends, the line may renew after a fresh review, or any balance may convert into a repayment schedule. Some lines also require the balance to be paid to zero once a year. Read the renewal and conversion terms before the first draw, not in the last month of the window.

Secured or unsecured

A secured line is backed by assets such as receivables, inventory or equipment, often through a UCC filing. An unsecured line has no specific asset pledged, but it may still require a personal guarantee. Secured lines tend to allow larger limits; the partner decides, based on its review.

Recurring costs a line can smooth

Lines suit businesses whose bills and receipts move on different clocks. Outagamie County had 454 specialty trade contractor employers in 2023, 57.7 percent with fewer than five employees (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023): electricians, plumbers, roofers and other trades that buy materials for one job while waiting to be paid for the last. Medical and dental offices, with 383 ambulatory health care employers in the county the same year, pay staff on schedule while insurance payments arrive later.

A line can also cover the first payrolls after hiring; our piece on a first hire in the Fox Cities covers the cash-flow questions. The sector pages map each trade's cycle, and local business figures give the wider picture.

What partners review for a credit line

  • Six to twelve months of business bank statements, to see how cash moves through the year
  • Accounts receivable, for a line secured by what customers owe
  • Business and personal tax returns for larger limits
  • Existing loans, advances and liens
  • The owner's credit history

Because a line can be drawn again and again, partners care most about whether the business repays draws on its own, from normal receipts.

Credit line versus term loan

Use a line for repeated, uneven costs that the business pays back within months. Use a term loan for one project that pays for itself over years. A line used for a long-term project tends to stay drawn, and a lender may not renew it. For a single, short gap, working capital financing is another option; the comparison table sets all six side by side.

SBA-backed lines also exist and are offered by SBA-participating lenders; Bellgrove does not arrange them. The four steps show how a request for a conventional line moves.

Straight answers

Common Questions

When can I draw on a business line, and when does that window close?

It is the stretch of time when draws are allowed. When it ends, the line may renew after review or the balance may move to a repayment schedule.

What makes a business credit line revolving?

A line where repaid amounts become available again, so the business can draw, repay and draw again up to the limit.

What is different about a non-revolving line of credit?

A line where each repayment reduces the balance but does not restore available credit, a bit like a loan taken in stages.

Does the unused part of my limit cost interest?

Usually only on the amount drawn. Check for fees on the unused limit, on each draw or for renewal.

Is it fine to run payroll through a credit line?

It can, when the cash is coming but late. A line that is always fully drawn for payroll is a sign the business needs a different fix.
