Inventory financing is business funding used to buy stock, with the inventory typically pledged as collateral and the balance repaid as goods sell or on set dates. Bellgrove Lenders, a small-business funding broker in Appleton, Wisconsin, explains how it works, how floor plan financing differs and when a credit line fits better. The terms, and the decision, come from lending partners.

How inventory financing works
- The business identifies the stock it needs, often backed by a supplier quote or purchase order.
- A partner reviews the business, its sales history and the goods themselves.
- If approved, the partner advances money for some or all of the purchase, sometimes paying the supplier directly.
- The business repays as the goods sell, on fixed dates, or both, according to the agreement.
Because inventory loses value if it sits, partners usually advance less than the full cost and look hard at how fast the goods have sold in the past.
Collateral and UCC filings
The inventory is the main collateral. The partner records its claim by filing a UCC financing statement with the state. That filing is public, and other lenders will see it. If the business already has a blanket lien from another lender covering all assets, a new partner may not take inventory as collateral until that is sorted out. Know what is already filed against the business before you apply.
Floor plan financing: meaning and an example
Floor plan financing is a type of inventory financing for dealers of high-value items with serial numbers, such as vehicles, boats, recreational vehicles or equipment. Each unit is financed individually. When a unit sells, the dealer repays that unit's balance.
Hypothetical example, not an offer: a dealer adds three units to its lot under a floor plan line. Each unit has its own balance. When the first sells, the dealer pays off that unit; the other two stay financed. If a unit sits unsold past a set date, the agreement may require partial principal payments, called curtailments.
Floor plan requirements vary by partner. Expect a dealer agreement, regular audits that check every financed unit is on the lot or accounted for, and strict timing for payoff after a sale.

Separately, 1,223 retail and 219 wholesale businesses ran with no paid employees in 2024 (Nonemployer Statistics 2024), a different program and year, so the two counts should not be added.
In the office ZIP code, 54911, retail trade accounted for 113 employer establishments and wholesale trade for 37 (U.S. Census Bureau, ZIP Code Business Patterns 2023). The Appleton, WI page has the full ZIP breakdown, and the sector pages cover the trades our partners fund.
What partners review for inventory financing
- Sales history, ideally by product line, to judge how fast the goods turn
- An inventory list or report showing what is on hand and what it cost
- The vendor's quote or the purchase order behind the new goods
- Recent deposits, plus full financials when the request is large
- Any existing UCC filings against the business's assets
Goods that sell steadily make stronger collateral than seasonal or slow-moving lines, so expect the partner to advance less against stock that turns slowly.
Stock loan, credit line or working capital?
- Inventory financing: one identifiable purchase of goods, secured by those goods.
- A line of credit: repeated restocking in varying amounts, drawn as needed.
- Working capital: a general gap that is not tied to specific stock.
The comparison page covers all six options. Have recent sales reports, an inventory list and the supplier quote ready, then see the steps after you call.
